Most companies we talk to or work with will need to address the lack of Customer-360 capabilities. In understanding this gap and potential solutions, we find two main paths: 1) improve the existing systems (CRM, ERP, Ecommerce etc.), or 2) Building the capability outside the core systems and feed the data back as needed. For transformational projects we see the first approach to be taking too long, being costly and very hard. The second approach provides fast time-to-market and lower cost, but doesn't fix the core problem (at first). Any experience or thoughts on these two approaches would be welcome!
